I am being sued by a collection agency for an old (over 3 years) Visa credit card debt. I live in Alabama and the Statue of Limitations on Open Accounts is 3 years. I hired an attorney but he says that I probably will have to settle because it is not an open account but a written contract account which has a SOL of 6 years. He says this because the collection agency produced a piece of paper that I signed when I opened the account (basically it's the credit card application). I researched on my own and most information that I found says that credit cards are always open accounts. I did find one place (Wiki Answers) where someone said that credit cards could be written contracts. Is my attorney wrong or can this indeed be a written contract in some way. I really need to know before I go to court. Please give me some type of solid backup to your answer and not just your opinion.

I know that canceling an open card can adversely affect credit. But I canceled the actual application process, minutes after I applied.

I had hoped to get instant approval to get a big discount on an airline ticket, but as a student and my little income they would have had to do a full background credit check (which would have gotten me the card), but I didn't have time to wait to buy the ticket, so I wanted to cancel.

How To Make Successful Credit Card Applications

If you want to have complete access to the latest services and products that are available then it is important to have credit cards. By using plastic we can get a cheaper price and greater options. It would be very difficult to make an online purchase without using a credit card. To shop in this day and age with flexibility and ease requires an understanding of credit card applications.

It wasn't so long ago that it was very easy to be given a credit card, but since the recession times have changed. A bank will now look deeper into your credit history and your ability to make the monthly payments.

If you want to get the best deal then you will need to research the different types of credit cards that are now available as there can be large differences between the interest rates and credit levels of various banks.

The easiest method to apply for a credit card is on the internet. There is a diverse range of operators online that can legally issue you credit cards. But if you are going to sign up with a company you have never heard of then it may be wise to delve a little in to their background just to ensure that they are not fraudulent.

When you fill out any credit card application it is vital to be completely honest. If you do not give the right information and are found out, then your cards will be cancelled and legal proceedings may be started against you. In the future it would be much harder to use any credit based services.

It can be helpful to check out your latest credit rating and report before applying for any credit card as it is this information that a lender will use to approve or turn down your application.

On the application it makes you choose your school but I go to a junior college and its not there, I found that both discover and american express dont have junior colleges on their list. Does anyone know why this is? Do they not accept junior colleges valid for their student credit cards?
