Are merchants allowed to ask for ID when you pay with a Mastercard credit card?

Yes or no? All it takes is a store employee to memorize your ID's serial number and BAM, your identity is stolen.

If the answer is no, please provide a link to where it says so on Mastercard's website.

This site explains the answer is no, as well provides a link to Mastercard and Visa’s policy.

WOW, so you mean if I dropped my credit card or left it on a counter ANYONE can pick it up and go on a spending spree?
Now that’s a lot scarier than thinking a store employee might memorize my DL number and do what with it?
