Being added as an authorized user will help someone get a good payment history. Once it is good enough they will start to receive their own credit offers where they can apply for their own cards and be removed from the other person account or remain. I would say that it depends on the situation. If it is someone you trust or are married to, I see no problem having one account where both people are on it together.
If they are trying to build up their credit they should have separate cards. If not one will only be a cosigner.

He will have to get a separate account so he can build his own credit. He can also get his wife to co-sign the application which will make it easier to get approved for a card and he’ll still build his own credit. Her getting him a card will not do any good.
